Job Description: Maintenance Worker Position Overview: Friends of Zoo Boise is seeking a full-time (40 hr/wk) Maintenance Worker to support and assist the Facilities Manager and maintenance department of Zoo Boise. Reports to: Facility and Operations Manager Schedule: Friday through Tuesday 8am-5pm. Weekends are required. Some evenings and holidays as needed. Compensation and Benefits: $18.00 - $19.00 per hour, depending on experience Vacation, medical benefits, retirement and & savings plan available. Job Duties: Performs construction of new and existing exhibits; general maintenance and repair to buildings and grounds at Zoo Boise. Inspects facilities for damage and areas in need of repair. Performs semi-skilled mechanical duties, carpentry, painting, masonry, and custodial maintenance. Utilizes various cleaning solutions and solvents to clean buildings, equipment, and other facilities. Operates light equipment such as weed-eaters, lawn mowers, chainsaw and medium equipment such as front-end loaders. Performs some landscape duties. Shovels and rakes gravel and dirt. Replaces bedding materials and compacts soil. Performs custodial maintenance throughout the zoo. Cleans restroom and shelter facilities. Picks up trash and ensures receptacles are emptied and in working order. Inspects and replaces damaged trash cans. Performs plumbing maintenance and repairs on sinks and toilets. Performs other duties as assigned. Nothing in this job description restricts management's right to assign or reassign duties and responsibilities to this position at any time. Qualifications 3-5 years of related experience; working around large animals is preferred; Ability to perform varied facilities construction, maintenance and custodial work; safely operate a wide variety of equipment and tools; safely utilize related protective gear and safety equipment; identify and prioritize additional tasks; display an attitude of cooperation and work harmoniously with all levels of employees, the general public and other organizations; communicate effectively in the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance; complete assignments in a timely fashion; understand and comply with all rules, policies and regulations; maintain prompt and regular attendance; Capacity to work independently and in teams; Ability to operate required computer programs; Working knowledge of general facilities maintenance including minor electrical, plumbing, and construction methods and safety standards; hand and power tools such as, but not limited to, nail guns and other common tools; general landscape care; Negative TB test; Valid Idaho Driver's License; Drug Free Workplace Working Conditions: Physical Efforts While performing the duties of this job the employee is always lifting/carrying up to 20 lbs, occasionally lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs, rarely lifting/carrying up to 100 lbs. Also the employee is always pushing/pulling up to 20 lbs, occasionally pushing/pulling up to 50 lbs, rarely pushing/pulling up to 100 lbs. The noise level is rarely very loud. Work includes sensory ability to talk, hear, smell, touch and feel. Work in this position also includes close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception. Employees will sit, stand, walk, run, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, grasp, climb and balance. Position requires hand/finger dexterity. Working Environment The work environment will include outdoor weather conditions, extreme temperatures, in wet and humid conditions, with areas of dust, odors, mist, gases or other airborne matter. Employees work in/at heights and are exposed to mechanical hazards. Employees will also drive a vehicle as part of this position. Employees will frequently work in and around animal cages and facilities, and must be able to respond in emergency situations of animal escape by assisting zoo staff. Work includes protected exposure to infectious bacteria, bodily fluids, and chemicals. About Zoo Boise: Zoo Boise is a 17-acre zoo located in beautiful Julia Davis Park of downtown Boise, Idaho. Our mission is to connect our visitors with animals to inspire and involve our community in the conservation of wildlife worldwide. It is home to over 300 animals from 100 species, receives 340,000 visitors annually and is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. The Friends of Zoo Boise is a 501(c)(3) membership organization that supports Zoo Boise in the area of animal acquisition, capital improvement projects, education programs, volunteer opportunities, and special events. The goal of each of these components is to increase public awareness, knowledge, and appreciation of the zoo, wild animals, animal habitats, species conservation, and the environment.
