Job Summary/Basic Function:
The International Scholars Coordinator position involves assessment and student and faculty success efforts focused on campus programming, immigration compliance, documentation, reporting, and collaborating with campus partners, particularly related to employment immigration.

Department Overview:
The Center for Global Engagement advances Boise State University's global recognition as a metropolitan, research university and provides leadership and coordination for campus-wide internationalization efforts and initiatives.

Level Scope:
Fully competent and productive professional contributor who applies acquired job skills, policies, and procedures to complete substantive assignments/projects/tasks of moderate scope and complexity. Works independently with general supervision; exercises judgment within defined guidelines and practices to determine appropriate action. May provide guidance and assistance to entry level professionals and/or support employees.

Essential Functions:
As a primary duty of this position, the employee will serve as a Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) for the purposes of maintaining the SEVIS database and associated record-keeping required by the Department of Homeland Security. In accordance with federal regulations governing access to the SEVIS system, the person holding this position must be either a US citizen or lawful permanent resident (8 CFR 214.3(I)(1)(ii).

Immigration Compliance, SEVIS Reporting and International Hiring (60%)

  • Communicate and liaise with departments, Human Resources, Tax Reporting and Export Controls on international hiring needs and processes
  • Serve as liaison between faculty and departments with regard to immigration regulations and compliance for international faculty, scholars, staff and students
  • Assist with H1B, TN, F, O and permanent residency petitions for faculty and staff, consulting with outside legal counsel as needed
  • Develop and lead information sessions and student support related to employment-based immigration questions, including OPT, CPT and Academic Training
  • Continuously improve and update immigration-related documents, including website, forms and email communications

J-1 Faculty, Scholars and Researcher Services (35%)

  • In collaboration with the International Student Services Coordinator, spearhead holistic approach to international scholars' services, including fostering a sense of belonging and community for international scholars and their dependents at Boise State University
  • Facilitate J-1 exchange visitor program opportunities across academic departments, and support program logistics including housing, health insurance and exchange activities
  • Support J-1 exchange visitors and dependents in their arrival and adjustment to the Boise community by connecting exchange visitors with appropriate resources

Perform other duties as assigned (5%)

  • Represent the department as needed at events and meetings
  • Projects and other duties as assigned by the Director
  • Occasional weekend/evening work may be required for events


Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to think analytically and critically
  • Experience planning and organizing projects and delegating work


Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree and 2 years of professional experience or equivalent relevant experience.

  • Position requires proof of U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status to serve as a Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO), per Department of Homeland Security and Department of State regulations.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree
  • One year or more experience with legal immigration documents in a professional setting. Additional training on immigration processes will be provided.
  • One year or more of living, working or studying abroad, or working with multicultural populations
  • One year or more working in a Higher Education environment
  • Previous DSO or ARO experience


Salary and Benefits:

$55,000-$60,000 annually, commensurate with experience. Boise State University provides a best-in-class benefits package, including (but not limited to):
