This role will be based in our Meridian, ID office. We offer a hybrid work schedule with 4 days in the office; and 1 day remote where it makes sense to do so.

Responsibilities

As our VP, Chief Actuary Officer, you will provide strategic direction and leadership to the Company's Actuarial Function. You will proactively participate with the Company's Senior and Extended Leadership Teams in developing and executing strategic plans to achieve the Company's business objectives. You will lead the Actuarial Function for the Company, including Pricing, Reserving, and Analytics. This position reports directly to the President. Additionally, you will provide insights into company, economic, and marketplace trends to contribute to the success of the company and other functional areas of the organization.

We'll count on you to:

  • Adapt and develop rating methodologies for both existing and new company products using advanced techniques to incorporate new variables, etc., in pursuit of a competitive advantage and creation of economic profit opportunities.
  • Lead the completion of rate reviews, ratemaking, and actuarial indications, including support of forecasting investment rates of return, underwriting expense provision, frequency/severity, and exposure trends.
  • Lead the vision, growth, and implementation of advanced analytics.
  • Proactively seek out competitive market analytics and other competitive position reviews that would have a material impact on business decisions and their outcomes.
  • Lead the actuarial component of the company's planning processes.
  • Support the development of Tableau reporting and analytical tools/models to support business functions.
  • Effectively utilize internal and external data to support actuarial analysis and business reporting needs.
  • Maintain actuarial policies and standards, ensuring they are consistent with regulator and corporate standards.
  • Collaborate with W.R. Berkley actuaries and analytics teams to advance company capabilities.
  • Lead the Actuarial Team, including responsibility for overall direction, coordination, and evaluation.
  • Identify, retrieve, and prepare data in support of actuarial analysis through SQL, Essbase, and other data sources.
  • Lead the regular preparation of adequate loss and expense reserves estimates, including any financial information pertaining to reserves needed by the Financial Department, company management, or corporate.
  • For both Home Office and Regional Underwriting, identify segments with profitable growth potential; identify underperforming segments and propose corrective actions to improve profitability.
  • Perform advanced analytics and modeling techniques, including but not limited to generalized linear modeling and other forms of multivariate analysis.
  • Participate in enterprise risk management initiatives, including support for catastrophe management, economic capital modeling, internal rate of return studies, etc.
  • Build and develop talent to ensure a staff capable of carrying out initiatives of the department.
  • Develop and offer strategic direction for the company, with strong consideration of how the Product Management team can best contribute to the success of the company generally and other functional areas of the company specifically.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by management.

What you need to have:

  • Bachelor's degree; or 15 years related experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society and a commitment to continuing education.
  • Ability to provide leadership and company strategic vision.
  • Problem analysis and problem resolution skills at both a strategic and functional level.
  • Interpersonal and communication skills including presentation skills.
  • Regularly and consistently demonstrates commitment to company values and guiding principles.
  • Proficient in and have knowledge of Microsoft Office and demonstrated ability to learn other software as needed.
  • Extensive working knowledge of Excel and a basic understanding of SQL is expected.
  • Working knowledge of actuarial or analytics software is highly desired including Arius, R, Python and Tableau.
