Description:

Research Scientist

We are a diverse portfolio of companies dedicated to health, wellness, and longevity. We are owned and led by #1 New York Times Bestselling Author Dr. Peter Attia. Early Medical is a virtual (telemedicine) practice focused on the applied science of longevity and Medicine 3.0. The practice deals extensively with nutritional interventions, exercise physiology, sleep physiology, emotional and mental health, and pharmacology to increase lifespan (how long you live), while simultaneously improving healthspan (the quality of your life). Some of the additional brands led by Peter include The Drive, a weekly deep-dive podcast focusing on maximizing longevity, and Early, a 12-module digital experience that's based upon a patient's journey within Early Medical. The Drive is routinely recognized as one of the leading health and fitness podcasts by Apple and YouTube. Our Research team conducts research to support the medical practice and to inform our wider public (through The Drive podcast, our e-newsletter, and other public content), each requiring attention to the intended audience and use of information.

We believe very strongly in what we do and the impact we make in the lives of our exceptional patients and international audience. We are incredibly grateful for our amazing team, made up of curious individuals who are obsessed with progressive learning and innovation. Our business thrives on autonomy, operating remotely with key leaders spread across the US. We are strong collaborators and work with an open-door management philosophy. We invest in building an amazing culture that highlights aspects of understanding and improving human lifespan and healthspan (live longer and live better) for our employees. Collectively, we have over 40 full-time remote employees from coast to coast.

Join us as we introduce Medicine 3.0 to the world.

About the Role

The field of longevity and aging is complex and full of questions that don't have easy answers. The questions that we care about often require us to examine all of the information at our disposal from scientific literature, government data, and even media outlets. Data may be incomplete. Sources may contradict each other. It is our job to think deeply and formulate the best and most reliable conclusions possible.

In this role, you will conduct research to support the medical practice and to inform our wider public (through The Drive podcast, our e-newsletter, and other public content), each requiring attention to the intended audience and use of information.

For instance, questions to support the clinical practice might include:

  • Under which circumstances does the risk of lean mass loss with GLP-1 receptor agonists outweigh the benefits of greater losses of fat mass?
  • Which statins are the best options for patients with atherosclerosis and type II diabetes if aiming to maximize lipid improvements while minimizing risk of HbA1c elevation?
  • What is the best interval for colonoscopy screenings if the goal is minimization of colon cancer deaths and deaths from colonoscopy complications?

While questions for our public content may include broader topics, such as:

  • How strong is the evidence that hearing loss causes dementia versus being a covariate or result of dementia?
  • How reliable is DNA methylation pattern analysis in predicting "biological age" and mortality risk?
  • Why have certain studies on "longevity drugs" been misleading and led to unjustified conclusions about their efficacy?

Under the direction of our Director of Research, you will be responsible for the research, synthesis, analysis, and presentation of information to answer time-sensitive clinical questions, reach broad audiences with creative and engaging editorials, prepare podcast interviews with world experts in science and health, and give critical thoughts and opinions on longevity literature.

The Work You'll Be Doing

  • You will digest large amounts of research literature and will use the information to determine the validity of, and expand upon, existing hypotheses, as well as to formulate new ones.
  • You will generate original documents, charts, figures, and tables to communicate relevant findings variously to clinicians, patients, and digital audiences under the guidance of the Director of Research.
  • You must be proactive about acquiring information from PubMed, Google Scholar, and research journals, as well as from communication with experts both within and outside of the organization.
  • Though much of your work will be independent, you will also function as part of a team through peer-editing as well as collaborative storyboarding and brainstorming for podcasts and other creative content.
  • In addition to the short-term output that forms most day-to-day efforts, you will have the opportunity to pursue long-term passion projects to guide the organization's collective perspective on broad areas of interest.

Requirements

  • Advanced degree in a relevant field (PhD preferred)
  • Bachelor's Degree in a scientific field (engineering included)
  • High level of proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Proficient with PubMed and Google Scholar
  • Preferably at least 2-5 years of experience in a research or medical setting where you were taught how to critically read scientific papers and understand scientific methods.
  • Open-minded and eager to receive and provide feedback for continuous growth
  • Adaptable and resilient in a dynamic, fast-paced environment
  • Passionate about Medicine 3.0 and Dr. Peter Attia's work

With your resume and (optional) cover letter, you will also attach a writing sample. This role involves substantial writing and requires a superior ability to organize information and concepts into a coherent narrative. Therefore, we require that each application include a writing sample to help us understand your style and how you synthesize and express ideas. (Note that late-stage candidates will also be asked to perform one or more writing assessments during the interview process.) Tip: Please be thoughtful in the sample you upload. It can be a dissertation, newsletter, blog post, commentary on a particular topic or study, etc, but should primarily be your own ideas and writing. Peer-reviewed publications tell us comparatively little about your work on an individual level, so we request that you refrain from using them as your sample. While samples related to biomedical science are often the best way to showcase your skill for this position, we are primarily interested in your ability to communicate a logical progression of ideas, so we also accept essays or other nonfiction writing related to non-science topics.

What We Offer

  • This position is fully remote
  • 100% employer-sponsored medical, vision, and dental insurance (we offer multiple plans to pick from, so that you can select plan that works best for your needs)
  • 100% employer-sponsored basic life insurance
  • 100% employer-sponsored short-term and long-term disability insurance
  • Voluntary employee benefits - including life insurance and AD&D Insurance
  • Employer-sponsored HSA contributions for HDHP medical plans
  • Additional HSA and FSA spending account plans for employees
  • 401(k) safe harbor match of 5%
  • Competitive holiday and PTO schedule

This role offers a competitive compensation package, the base salary range is $85k-$100k. Many factors go into the decision-making process for our offers, one of those factors is geographic location. While this is a remote position, we want to ensure that this opportunity satisfies the cost-of-living within the city in which our employees reside. Other factors include external market benchmark data, skill and experience level, as well as performance and evaluation through the interview process.

Early Medical is an equal-opportunity employer in accordance with all applicable federal, state, and local laws. We ensure equal employment opportunity to all employees and applicants without discrimination or harassment based on race, religious creed, color, age, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, religion, marital status, medical condition, disability, military service, pregnancy, childbirth, and related medical conditions, or any other classification protected by federal, state, or local law.
